In January, I began an adventure. I wanted to learn to write picture books. I started with some that my mom had written and with her permission, I started writing and revising. Soon, I was immersed in all things PB.
I read picture books. I researched them. I joined twitter. I took classes. I joined a critique group.
Then, a month ago, I put my work out there for the first time.
I entered the #50preciouswords contest hosted by Vivian Kirkfield. The contest rules are simple: write a story for ages 12/under (it must have a beginning, middle, and end) in 50 words or less.
I didn't squeeze into the top 57. But ...
I did get listed as an Honorable Mention in the STEM category.
Here is my entry:
Seed cried,"It's too dark."
Earth replied,"Push through it."
Sprout shouted, "I see the light."
Sun said,"I'll brighten your day."
Sprout sobbed, "I'm wilting."
Earth called, "Get ready for the rain event."
Leaf applauded, "That's a releaf."
Earth replied, "Lettuce, give thanks."
It was a great challenge and I have enjoyed every minute of this new adventure in writing for kids.
And, as I have learned, everything should be revised and rewritten. So, here is my rewrite:
Seed sobbed,"It's too dark."
Earth encouraged,"Push through it."
Sprout shouted, "I see the light."
Sun said, "I'll brighten your day."
Sprout sniveled, "I'm wilting."
Earth announced, "Get ready for the rain event."
Leaf applauded, "That's a releaf."
Earth urged, "Lettuce, give thanks."
